Beluga is a leather bag that I designed and got made in India with leather artisans.
Using detachable straps, the bag can transform from a minimal tote into a functional backpack.
My goal was to introduce a clean, simple bag design made in India that was made up of fewer components and materials, but gave more flexibility and interchangeability to the wearer. I worked on form development, ideation, original mockups, CMF, and technical drawings. After 6 months, I was able to turn a sketch from my notebook into a real object I could use.
I grew up in the SF Bay Area. The cities fast-paced, dynamic lifestyle tailored the design. I wanted to create a bag that pushed the user to bring less; to bring what was truly necessary for them on that day. My family and I visit India nearly every other year. Throughout the visits, I have witnessed both extremes of life. I set out to build a bag that was inspired by the natural forms and vibes of the tropical landscape, working with local craftsmen that love what they do.
